Sequoia

It is amazing to stand in a grove of redwoods!

My family traveled to Sequoia a couple of years ago and it is amazing to stand in a grove of redwoods. I had my kids join hands to give some context to the size of these monsters(the trees). I placed the kids in the lower third with the boys occupying the convergence areas in the left and right sides, too. Have a great weekend!

Go Lakers!

by mkitada ·

Taken on media day the last year that Kobe wore number 8.

Laker fans here’s an oldie in honor of our guys in gold and purple. This was taken on media day the last year that Kobe wore number 8. It was a crazy media day since it was just after the whole Colorado incident.

Now for the technical stuff. Kobe’s face is placed in the convergence of the upper horizontal and the left vertical third. He’s actually smiling and happy during the choas that is media day. All the tv stations tape the little promos that have Lakers saying K-Cal blah blah or your watching the Lakers on TNT. It’s fun but nuts with everyone running around trying to get interviews. Just trying to give a little love to the Lakers as they gov for Kobe’s 4th ring. One day I’ll post some shots of when I got to fly with the Lakers on their charter plane up to Seattle. The best part was hanging with Chick Hearn, the voice of the Lakers until his tragic demise. He was very helpful and showed me the ropes on my dream trip. Beat San Antonio(and the Boston).

Stick a fork in it…

a food shoot that I did for the O.C. Register.

Okay, I had to take a break from all the travel images and introduce the great images that surround us everyday. This image was from a food shoot that I did for the O.C. Register a few years back. I was waiting for the owner of a Thai restaurant to talk to me about her favorite parts of her business. I was looking at the way the afternoon light was streaming through the windows and onto the tables. I placed the fork along the left vertical third and the tines in the convergence of the top horizontal third and the vertical. The interesting shadows were made by the light passing through window blinds. I really love the bend in the shadow from the fork. So, keep a sharp eye out for beautiful images that might be right under your nose.

Yosemite Moonrise

by mkitada ·

The trees on the ridge look like people mesmerized by the moon.

I was on my way to dinner with a fabulous couple(the destination wedding couple) when I saw the moon rising over the valley in Yosemite. I pulled the car over and used the roof as a support since the exposure was very low considering the lack of light. I set my f stop at f/8 since I wanted to keep the ridge as sharp(or in focus)as possible and obviously the moon, too. So let’s get to the composition. I chose to place the ridge at the bottom of the frame to anchor the sky and to make the moon stand out more against the muted sky. The moon was placed in the lower area of convergence to give it room to rise up. I love that the trees on the ridge look like people mesmerized by the moon. The feel of the scene was very primal. I could imagine this scene being repeated over thousands of years without a human eye every seeing it. It was special for me to see it and to capture it. Enjoy!

The Road Less Traveled…

by mkitada ·

Always be aware of what is ahead and try to have your camera ready for anything

A surprise image that allowed me to feature Half Dome with people to provide context.

My recent trip to Yosemite for a destination wedding resulted in this image. We were walking up the trail when I saw this scene. I rushed to set my camera to expose for the background and let the woman and the child render as silhouettes. So, Half Dome remained as a correctly exposed background and I placed the couple in the lower right hand area of convergence. Even though the lower parts of their bodies were hidden by the trail, I still love the graphic starkness of this image. It was late in the afternoon and the sun was rather low in the sky, just above the peaks surrounding the valley,. The 1/3 2/3 rule is in effect here with Half Dome dominating the bottom 2/3rds fo the frame and the sky allotted to about 1/3 of the frame. Always be aware of what is ahead and try to have your camera ready for anything. You just might be surprised with beautiful images.
